ISCR Lecture Series: The Drag Queens of Indiana Avenue, 1933-1950

June 1 from 2 to 3 p.m. 

Ages 16 and older are invited to learn of the hidden history of drag queens performing regularly in Indiana Avenue jazz clubs. This program is presented by Stephen Lane, the Library’s Indianapolis Special Collections librarian, and is sponsored by the Library’s LGBTQ Committee. 

History of the War Memorial Plaza

June 2 from 2 to 3 p.m. 

Learn about the centennial history of the development of the War Memorial Plaza in the years following World War I. Presenter will be J. Steward Goodwin, retired brigadier general of the U.S. Air Force and executive director of the Indiana War Memorials Commission. This program is sponsored by the Marion County Historical Society.

Aging Well: A Series for Older Adults

June 5 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Older adults can learn the steps they can take to live healthier lives with vitality while preventing cognitive decline. Sessions are geared toward adults aged 60 and older, but those of all ages are welcome to attend. This program will focus on diet. Learn about aging in a healthy way during this lecture and cooking demonstration.

The Black Women’s Writing Society

June 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

Join members of the Black Women’s Writing Society who share a love for the written word. Poets, playwrights, essayists and storytellers are invited to gather in the Center for Black Literature & Culture at Central Library. Sessions include time for writing, education and sharing.

Naturalization Ceremony

June 19 from 10 to 11 a.m. 

The entire community is invited to attend this naturalization ceremony in Central Library’s Clowes Auditorium as individuals will take the Oath of Allegiance to become naturalized citizens of the United States.

As the signature event during the Adult Summer Reading Program, Favorite Fiction: Rebooted, bestselling author Madeline Miller will discuss the mythological stories in her books, The Song of Achilles and Circe. Book signings and sales by Indy Reads Books will follow.

ABCs of Diabetes

June 4, 11, 18 & 25 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. 

A free, four-part diabetes education series for adults, instructed by the Marion County Health Department. Topics include eating healthier, increasing activity, taking medications, and preventing complications. Attendees should plan to attend all four sessions at a given library location.

Minecraft Club at Central

June 5, 12, 19 & 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.Minecrafters ages 7 and up are invited to use the Learning Curve’s laptops to mine and build in Central Land, a virtual world hosted on the Curve’s private Minecraft server.

3D Printing @ Central

June 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Adults ages 18 and older can learn the basics of 3D printing from concept to creation using Tinkercad and the 3D Systems Cube Printer. 

Hedgehog Hannah Animal Show

June 6 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Children of all ages and families are invited to join Hedgehog Hannah to learn about a few animal creatures, one of which is most likely a tarantula.

Learn how to read, watch and listen on a PC, tablet or phone, as well as search and download materials from the Library’s extensive collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks and digital music.

Little Learners Storytime

June 7, 14, 21 & 28 from 11 a.m. to noon. Little Learners up to age 5 and their families are invited for story time in the Green Screen Theater. They’ll read stories, sing songs, and rhyme. Stay after to play.

June 27 from 11 a.m. to noon. Children of all ages are invited to a performance that pays homage to the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood while putting a new spin on it. Characters explore the diverse interpretations of the story, including a new version set in space.
