Note: In the June issue of Urban Times, this report featured an incorrect date for the Parlor Social engagement.
The performer known for playing Wade “Unique” Adams, the first openly transgender student on television, in the hit musical series Glee, will help The Cabaret celebrate Pride month in June, as part of The Cabaret’s summer season.
Alex Newell, who more recently wowed audiences as the goddess Asaka, mother of the Earth, in the Tony-winning Broadway revival of Once on This Island, will be joined on the summer roster by Parlor Social and Cassie Levy.
“We like to keep things interesting for our audience by bringing in a variety of performance styles that fall under the cabaret umbrella” said Artistic Director & CEO Shannon Forsell, “and we’re thrilled to present a summer season that does just that.”
Parlor Social, a duo from Montreal, is known for a unique sound, which they’ve dubbed “speakeasy soul,” paying homage to the Harlem Renaissance with a modern twist, incorporating an undercurrent of urban & hip-hop beats.
Broadway star Caissie Levy will be taking a break from her busy Broadway schedule (where she currently plays as Elsa in the Disney blockbuster hit, Frozen) to wrap up the season in August. Levy has performed in such hits as Hair, Ghost, Rent, Wicked and, Les Miserables.
Levy’s performances will be in partnership with celebrated visual artist Marianne Glick and Gallery 924. Marianne’s show will comprise a new collection of abstract paintings inspired by music, and will be the featured exhibit in the gallery during the month of August. Cabaret guests will be invited to meet Glick and Levy at post-show champagne receptions in the gallery.
Tickets can be purchased online at thecabaret.org or by calling 317-275-1169.
