After three months of darkness, the Fitness Zone at the Boner Fitness & Learning Center will open its doors on Monday, June 22. The action comes following Mayor Joe Hogsett’s latest COVID-19 policy, with guidance from the Marion County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control.

It won’t be business as usual, however. On Mondays through Fridays, the Fitness Zone will be open the first two hours for seniors only. The temporary schedule is:

Monday – Friday

8 to 10 a.m. – Seniors only

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Fitness Zone open.

1 to 3 p.m. – Closed for cleaning.

3 to 8 p.m. – Fitness Zone open.

Saturday – Sunday

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. -Fitness Zone open.

1 to 2 p.m. – Closed for cleaning.

2 to 6 p.m. – Fitness Zone open.

The Fitness Zone director reserves the right to limit the number of people in the building at any one time to ensure the safety of staff and members. While we want to accommodate as many members as possible, we must balance both the safety of our staff and members as well as the availability of staff to monitor and clean the building.

Facility changes:

  • Each member must answer health screening questions and have a temperature check upon arrival.
  • All cardio and weight equipment has been moved to allow for 6 feet between each piece of equipment.
  • No circuit training is allowed at this time. Use only one machine at a time.
  • No pick-up basketball allowed at this time.
  • Equipment checkout, water fountains, deli cart, lockers, and shower facilities are not available at this time.
  • There will only be one person allowed in the bathroom at a time.
  • IUPUI trainers are not available at this time.

Membership changes:

  • Only paid members will be allowed in the facility.
  • Guest passes are not available for sale or redemption during this time.
  • No children or guests are allowed in the facility without an active membership.
  • All membership billing will resume beginning July 1.

Cleaning and sanitation changes:

  • Members should bring their own towels, mats and water bottles.
  • Staff will be wearing face masks. Members are encouraged to wear one where appropriate.
  • Members must use hand sanitizer upon entering the building. Staff has installed more hand sanitizer stations around the building.
  • Staff will provide microfiber cloths and spray bottles for each member to clean the equipment before and after each use.
  • Cloths and bottles will only be used by one member and then returned to the front desk when they leave.

Fitness & Learning Center staff said they appreciate members’ cooperation in implementing these changes so the facility can safely re-open. Those with questions should call 317-423-2000.

2: Circle City Industrial Complex opens its parking lot

Patrons of Mass Ave restaurants and other shops now have another parking option – just a couple of blocks north of Mass Ave’s East End at the Circle City Industrial Complex. The 500-vehicle lot has been opened to Mass Ave shoppers, said Rachel Ferguson, vice president of Teagen Development, which owns the massive facility at 1125 Brookside Ave.

Ferguson said both employees and patrons can use the four-acre lot, which is also adjacent to a Pacers Bike Share station located at the corner of 10th Street and Brookside Avenue.

3: Library’s curbside pickup program is expanded

Curbside delivery of books and other materials to patrons is now available at most Indianapolis Public Library sites. Since May 18, curbside delivery has been piloted at five select IndyPL locations while its buildings remain closed to the public due to the COVID-19 emergency.

The hours for curbside delivery will be adjusted slightly from those offered at the original curbside sites. It is available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at all locations, and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Central Library among other outlying branches.

The new Martindale-Brightwood branch is scheduled to open later this month. The InfoZone at The Children’s Museum remains closed, and the Fountain Square Branch, which was set to formally close on May 8, will not reopen.

Procedures for obtaining materials via curbside service remain the same. Individuals can request materials online or over the phone to staff at any location to be picked up at that site. They would then need to contact the branch to inform staff of their arrival time. Patrons who arrive on foot or by bicycle will be served as long as safe social distancing practices are observed.

Library materials should only be returned via outdoor drop boxes, which will be quarantined and cleaned in accordance with established health guidelines before being recirculated into the Library’s collection. In addition, all new physical item checkouts will have a 21-day checkout time, and all fines and late fees will continue to be waived until further notice.

For more details on curbside service and frequently asked questions, visit indypl.org/curbside.

While the Library’s physical locations remain closed, individuals can utilize such free online offerings as eBooks, streaming videos, resources for research and remote learning, video read-alongs, and the “Ask-a-Librarian” reference service. Residents can also get or renew a Library card online at indypl.org.
