Indy Parks will kick off its free Summer Concert and Movie series at Garfield Park at 9 p.m. Friday, June 26, with a special screening of The Lion King. Throughout the summer, park visitors can enjoy four movies and 16 concerts at Broad Ripple Park, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park, Garfield Park, and Eagle Creek Park. Virtual performances will soon be available on the Indy Parks YouTube channel.
“As we unveiled our Summer Concert and Movie series, we wanted to make sure our offerings were safe, fun, and attractive to the many people who depend upon our services,” said Linda Broadfoot, Indy Parks director. “Park goers are in for some stellar movies and an impressive showcase of jazz, hip hop, funk, rhythm and blues, Latin, and folk performances.
For Friday’s drive-in movie, volunteers will provide traffic control and radio tune-in instructions for the movie’s audio frequency.
Summer concerts begin in July and will include Clint Breeze and The Groove, the Midwest Rhythm Exchange, Amanda Gardier Quartet, Owl Music Group, Bryan Thompson, and The Indianapolis Jazz Collective.
Unlike previous years and due to the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, Indy Parks has reduced its annual offerings from 70 concerts and movies at nine parks to 16 concerts and four movies at four parks. In consideration of state and local health guidelines, Indy Parks made adjustments based on the ability to isolate the audience from performers, control the audience size (based on annual attendance), adequately staff events, and maintain safety throughout the series.
The Indianapolis Opera will close out the Summer Concert and Movie series with a special performance on Sept. 11.
