A new interactive map and mobile app will guide participants through the outdoor experiences
Public art is coming to locations and spaces that may currently have little or no such amenities, thanks to Indy Art & Seek, a partnership of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
Indy Art & Seek, funded by Lilly Endowment, features more than 100 mini-installations, performances, literary pieces and individual artworks along urban streets, as well as six large-scale installations in KIB GreenSpaces. On Saturday, Sept. 5, Indy Art & Seek will launch an interactive map and mobile application to guide participants through the experiences.
An example of an Art & Seek installation can be found at Historic Meridian Park’s pocket park in the 200 block of E. 33rd St. Sabra Logan and Libada Dance will present Comm-UNITY, a dance performance in whichLibada Dance Company dancers interact with the audience spreading the light of unity. This performance, along with all other performances, will have a video component to Libada’s pin on the app.
According to an Arts Council press release, Indianapolis artists worked with community partners and used existing spaces and conditions to create fun, thoughtful, and beautiful installations that encourage communities to see their surroundings in new ways.
“These artistic installations are meant to provide unexpected ‘moments of delight’ for our residents and visitors alike,” said Kristina Uland, senior vice president for development and external affairs at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “The artists have created incredible pieces that are not only meant to be appreciated on their own, but to also call attention to how art plays an important part in everyday life.”
Mobile app users will be able to find the locations of the 106 public art pieces, see photos and videos of the artists at work, watch live performances that were recorded on-site, take selfies and share their discoveries, and earn badges to win real-life prizes. To use the app, download Otocast mobile app from the smartphone’s App Store (iPhone and Android versions are available). Turn on Location Services and allow the app to access your location. Find the project. “Indy Art & Seek” should be the first guide listed.
Art & Seek includes “art interventions” – temporary, typically small-scale, physical art installations, live performances, and recordings/broadcasts that reflect a neighborhood’s identity and sense of place and promote equity and inclusivity. Although art interventions are often presented as unsanctioned “street art,” Art & Seek art was commissioned and installed with permission.
Lilly Endowment funded Indy Art & Seek through its 2018 initiative, Strengthening Indianapolis Through Arts and Cultural Innovation. For more information, visit www.indyartandseek.org or follow @indyartandseek and #artINDseek on social media.
