Traffic update: Methodist Hospital expansion, Delaware Street project and latest from North Split

METHODIST HOSPITAL: Major utility work is starting soon to prepare for the new IU Health Downtown hospital and expanded Methodist medical campus south of 16th Street. Utility work on nearby streets is scheduled to begin on Sunday, Sept. 22. This extensive underground utility work will require temporary road closures. IU Health is working with the City of Indianapolis to abbreviate the construction schedule and minimize the impact on traffic as much as possible.

Phase 1. This portion of Missouri Street, Senate Avenue and 16th Street will be closed Sept. 22 through Jan. 25.

Phase 2. The intersection of Capitol Avenue and 16th Street will be closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 25.

Phase 3. This portion of Capitol Avenue will be closed Dec. 22 through March 7.

Temporary Emergency Department Access. A temporary road to the Methodist Hospital emergency department will be open at all times to emergency department patients and EMS vehicles Sept. 22 through March 7.

NOTE: The dates above are subject to change as work could be impacted by weather. To minimize the impact of noise on patient care, road construction is not scheduled during the night.

DELAWARE STREET UPDATES

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works expects to shift Delaware Street traffic between Maryland and Vermont streets to the newly rebuilt easternmost travel lanes on or after Monday, Aug. 16. Traffic will then use the easternmost parking lane as a travel lane with the new configuration. Following the shift, the westernmost lanes of Delaware Street will close for construction. The sidewalk on the west side of Delaware will also close to pedestrians during this phase.
The traffic switch also reopens the sidewalk on the east side of Delaware Street along most of the corridor. Pedestrians may follow the sidewalk on the east side of Delaware Street from Maryland Street to Washington Street, where signs will direct them across Washington Street to the west side of Delaware Street. Pedestrians should follow all detour signage, particularly at intermittent intersection crossings.
The contractor also plans to reopen the eastern portion of the intersection of Vermont and Delaware streets in conjunction with the changes to traffic patterns.
Additionally, the contractor working on East Market Street between Delaware and Alabama Streets also expects to reopen the western portion of the intersection of Delaware and Market streets this week, so work can begin on the opposite side of the intersection. Market Street from Delaware to Alabama will remain closed to traffic. A temporary north-south pedestrian walkway through the Market Street construction zone, in place since the beginning of the project, must be removed to accompany this change, but pedestrians will have access to the east and west plazas of the City Market using crosswalks at Wabash Street. The Indianapolis City Market remains open to the public during construction.

When complete in late 2021, the approximately $3.8 million Delaware Street rehabilitation project will include more than 4.7 lane miles of newly reconstructed road surfaces as well as new sidewalks and ADA ramps along with two new IndyGo Super Stop locations and dedicated bus lanes along the east side of Delaware Street.
