When the Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay opened in December 2015, many thought the end was near for the YMCA at the Athenaeum.
Took nine years, but the end is here.
The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis announced on Jan. 30 that it would close its Athenaeum branch on March 28, ending a relationship which began in 1992 – reviving a tradition at the historic Downtown landmark that began as Das Deutche Haus with a heavy emphasis on physical fitness.
Craig Mince, president and CEO of the Athenaeum Foundation, said his organization plans to continue in the role first established by the Athenaeum Turners, who operated the building for decades.
“As for the gym space and what is in store for it, we at the Athenaeum Foundation are committed to seeing that space maintain its physical fitness/wellness history,” Mince Said. “The classic Turner motto, ‘A Sound Mind In A Sound Body,’ will continue to ring true here at the Athenaeum.”
Mince said the Foundation is currently looking at many different options to have a community-driven gym/wellness space up and running as soon as possible. “It’s a pretty sad thought – the Athenaeum without the YMCA in it.” But he added, “The decades-long partnership is one we can all hang our hat on.”
In a press release, The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis said that after March 28 all of its Downtown operations will fully transition to the Irsay Family YMCA at CityWay.
“This decision comes after extensive discussions and careful consideration with the goal of ensuring the YMCA’s long-term sustainability and continued impact in the community,” the press release indicated.
YMCA leaders said the decision to consolidate its Downtown operations “is not the result of any business dealings between the two non-profit organizations.”
“This was a very thoughtful decision made following consultation with our trusted partners at the Athenaeum Foundation,” said YMCA CEO and President Gregg Hiland. “While transitions like these are never easy, we are confident that this change will position the YMCA to better serve our community and fulfill our mission for years to come.”
The YMCA’s press release noted that the YMCA at the Athenaeum “has played a significant role in the lives of its members and the community. From fitness programs to youth activities, the location has been a hub for fostering connection and wellness. The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis remains deeply grateful to the members, volunteers and donors who have supported the organization’s work at this location.”
