The Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission granted approval for Paul Musielak of Gem Homes to build two single-family residences in Herron-Morton Place – one on Delaware Street and the other on Pennsylvania Street.
One is scheduled for construction at 1826 N. Delaware St. on a vacant lot that once housed a single-family home which was eventually enlarged to be a duplex. That structure was demolished between 1972 and 1979.
The house, which includes a detached three-car garage, is traditional in design, the predominant material being smooth-finish fiber-cement lap siding with a 6-inch reveal. The
front has dual gables. The lower gable has decorative shingle siding. There is a full-width porch with wrapped square columns and dual segmental arches. The rear façade has a shed roof porch, accessed by full-light doors. The garage is a side gable design, with board and batten in the gable ends.
The house to be built at 1821 N. Pennsylvania St., a vacant lot which once featured a two-story frame dwelling with a 1 ½-story stable. The stable was probably demolished by 1915 and replaced with a frame accessory structure. The house was destroyed between 1972 and 1979.
The new construction will be a two-story house with a one-story detached garage. The house
would have an asphalt, side gable roof with a hip roof over the rear portion of the home and a shed roof over the dormer. The house would be clad in smooth fiber cement lap and board and batten siding. On the front façade there would be a full-width front porch with a hipped roof. The rear, east elevation would feature a shed roof porch. The house would also feature two over two light double hung windows and four light fixed windows.
The garage would be a front gable structure with smooth fiber cement lap siding. It would feature a double, overhead garage door and single pedestrian door.
Both approvals followed minor design changes recommended by IHPC staff.
Following are more Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission actions taken the May 7 public hearing. The Commission meets the first Wednesday of each month. Administrative hearings, with an IHPC staff member serving as hearing officer, are scheduled every Tuesday. Approval for projects generally comes in the form of Certificates of Appropriateness.
WOODRUFF PLACE
* A petition by Ali Khan for approval of work completed without approval at 958 Middle Drive was continued to the Aug. 6 hearing without debate at the request of the petitioner. The work involves altered openings, siding and trim, and replacement of doors.
* Ali Khan’s request for an extension regarding monthly check-ins for violation correction at 958 Middle Drive was approved.
DRAKE APARTMENTS
* Brandon Badger’s petition to rezone the building at 3060 N. Meridian St. to D9, a dwelling classification, was approved.
HERRON-MORTON PLACE
* A petition by Rachel Walker to demolish the southern portion of the primary structure at 2179 N. Pennsylvania St. was approved.
LOCKERBIE SQURE
* Jonathan Lamb was granted approval to dispose of siding from the demolished structure at 331 N. Park Ave.
FOUNTAIN SQUARE
* The Commission approved the negative findings of fact regarding petitioner Alex Ostrovsky’s request for less window transparency than required at 1126 Prospect St.
