The Friends of Garfield Park are excited to announce a grand reopening celebration of the historic fountains at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 6, in the Sunken Garden located at 2505 Conservatory Drive.
This special event is to commemorate the fountains flowing once again after an extensive, multi-million and multi-year renovation. Mayor Joe Hogsett with representatives from Indy Parks & Recreation as well as other city officials will be on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Circle City Sidewalk Stompers clown band will perform family entertainment and children’s activities will also be available. Live music will be provided by local artist Steve Bogard. Food and beverages will be available to purchase.
Leaders of Friends of Garfield Park said the event’s focus is to not only bask in the splendor of the newly restored fountains, but also to ensure the dancing water and colorful lights continue on for another century in Garfield Park. The fountains in Garfield Park were dedicated in 1916 – and now the awe-inspiring centerpiece is active once again. Both long-time visitors of Garfield Park and first-timers can’t help but cherish the renewed vibrancy of the fountains. Looking to the future, the Friends need the help of the community to ensure the historic and treasured fountains remain the centerpiece of Garfield Park.
It is critical the Fountain Preservation Fund grows to a minimum balance of $1 million to generate the annual funds the Friends must spend to keep the fountains operational. The fund is $300,000 away from that goal and every dollar matters, Friends leaders said, asking all to consider making a donation to the fountain preservation fund and joining for the grand reopening celebration.
