New York Street underpass closure is now imminent / Vermont Street work also at hand

Beginning on or after Wednesday, Aug. 4, New York Street will be closed from East Street to Pine Street as part of the Interstate 65/70 North Split reconstruction project, although motorists wishing to travel northbound can use New York Street to access College Avenue. Eastbound vehicular traffic wishing to continue on New York Street will be directed south onto Ohio Street. All pedestrian traffic will be redirected to Vermont Street.

The full closure will continue through Aug. 18, weather permitting, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation. Local access to residents and businesses between East Street and Davidson Street will be maintained. For more details, see previous postings on urbantimesonline.com.

* Also as part of the North Split project, the closure of Market Street between East Street and Highland Avenue will remain in place until Friday, Aug. 6. The detour follows Washington Street. Local access will be maintained between Highland Avenue and Pine Street for residents and businesses. The nighttime closure (7 p.m. to 5 a.m.) of 10th Street between Massachusetts Avenue and Dorman Street will also continue until Aug. 6. Traffic is detoured to 16th Street.

* Another Downtown street closure involves Vermont Street between Delaware and Alabama streets, the city’s Department of Public Works has announced. That street is expected to be closed on or after Monday, Aug. 2, for intersection improvements related to the Delaware Street pavement rehabilitation project. Work will occur in the easternmost portion of the intersection of Delaware Street and Vermont Street. The work will not affect current traffic flow on Delaware Street, which is currently restricted to the westernmost lanes.
During the closure, westbound traffic on Vermont Street should follow New Jersey Street, Michigan Street and Pennsylvania Street. Eastbound traffic should follow Delaware Street, North Street and Alabama Street. The intersections of Talbott Street, Alabama Street and Massachusetts Avenue will remain open during the closure.
Following completion of the first phase in mid-August, the contractor expects to begin work on the west side of the  intersection with Vermont Street in mid-to-late August.  At the same time, the contractor plans to close the westernmost lanes of Delaware Street, moving traffic to the newly rebuilt easternmost lanes.
When complete, the approximately $3.8 million Delaware Street rehabilitation project will include more than 4.7 lane-miles of newly reconstructed road surfaces as well as new sidewalks and ADA ramps along with two new IndyGo Super Stop locations and dedicated bus lanes along the east side of Delaware Street.
