Freetown Village will reprise its 2022 production, Sign of the Times, a play centering on a young African American teacher, Gwendolyn Harris, and the groundbreaking moment in 1920 when women in the United States first exercised their right to vote.
Opening Friday, Sept. 13, at the District Theatre, Sign of the Times will celebrate the 104th anniversary of the historic ratification of the 19th Amendment as well as the upcoming 2024 election.
Five performances will take place through Sunday, Sept. 15. Showtimes are 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sept. 13; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sept. 14, and 4 p.m. on Sept. 15.
A fictional character, Gwendolyn embodies the spirit and challenges of women during the pivotal historical era. Set against the backdrop of a nation on the cusp of monumental change, the play captures Gwendolyn’s emotional and transformative journey as she navigates the first election in which women are allowed to cast their votes. She reflects on the efforts of generations of women who made the moment possible.
The play is particularly timely as the nation reflects on the significant progress made since the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920. At that time, it was unthinkable for a woman to run for public office, but today, women hold unprecedented roles in government and leadership. The U.S. Congress has a record number of women serving. And nationwide, women are leading in roles as varied as governors, mayors, and state representatives. Additionally, a woman is the official presidential candidate of a major political party.
Sign of the Times works to offer audiences a poignant look at the early days of women’s suffrage, providing insight into the courage and determination of those who fought for this fundamental right. Through Gwendolyn’s story, the play highlights the enduring impact of the suffrage movement.
“This play is a tribute to the women who paved the way for future generations,” said Ophelia Wellington, founder of Freetown Village. “We hope that Sign of the Times will not only honor their legacy but also inspire audiences to appreciate and reflect on the progress achieved since 1920.”
Tickets are $25 each. For more information and to purchase tickets, go to www.freetownvillage.org.
