16 Tech continues to make significant impact: annual report

Innovation Building 1 was 16 Tech’s first building, opened in August 2020. The state-of-the-art office-lab building houses the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute, Central Indiana Corporate Partnership and its initiatives, Indiana School of Medicine and various startup labs.

The energy and vibrancy at the 50-acre 16 Tech Innovation District has never been stronger. The 2024-2025 Impact Report reveals a district in motion, advancing discovery, entrepreneurship and community connection in the heart of Indianapolis.

Noted the report, 16 Tech is elevating the tech enablement of Indiana’s key industries, life sciences and advanced manufacturing, and serves as a model for how innovation, talent and community intersect to drive economic impact.

Key takeaways:

* $165 million in active development in the life sciences (IU LAB and Heartland Bioworks) to advance discoveries that improve human health and quality of life.

* 300 companies (up from 200 a year prior) and 1,200 employees in the district across research, tech and creative industries.

* 700-plus students and founders engaged through new experiential learning and entrepreneurship programs.

* More than $2.2 million in Community Investment Fund grants to 65 resident-led projects since 2019.

“Innovation rarely happens by accident. It happens with intentional design-when we connect people, ideas and resources to accelerate progress,” said 16 Tech CEO Emily Krueger. “With 70 percent of 16 Tech remaining to be developed, there is even greater opportunity ahead. 16 Tech is prime for the next generation of startups and collaborations that will define our future.”
